Rollin', Rollin', Rollin' - Traveling in a Wheelchair
Away We Go
Traveling in a Wheelchair
Sight-seeing, eating exotic food, leisurely perusing an art gallery or museum, searching out local music – I used to love it all. I even loved the many business trips my husband and I took. But, after the accident in July 1991, with a spinal cord injury (C5/6, incomplete), I wasn't sure I could handle travel's challenges ever again. I was confined to a wheelchair, needed special facilities wherever I went, and often needed assistance. For the first year post-accident, to keep it simpler, I just stayed home.
My New Year's resolution for 1994 was to travel again. It was a tremendous boost to my self-esteem and gave me undreamed of pleasure. There are so many wonderful ways to enjoy any destination – or just a long layover I would deprive myself no longer. The world’s a big place. Happily, much of it is accessible. Let's go see some of it!
Here are many traveling tricks I've learned, along with some related, fun stories.
