FORWARD FROM THE BOOK
By Michael C. Post, M.D
've worked with profoundly injured patients for years, but must admit I am grateful that I have not had to experience such pain and limitation myself - I don't know whether I could survive. Journey to Well superbly reflects the courage and strength I see in so many of those who are faced with a similar, lengthy and difficult recovery. Even though the general public is becoming much more aware of spinal cord injury, no one can really comprehend what it must be like to lose the body's normal function without experiencing it first hand. This book provides us all with a treasured resource by allowing the reader to vividly experience the tragedy through the eyes of the author. I am especially pleased to see confirmed in its pages the fact that vitality, hope and joy live on in the experience of anyone who has the intention and courage to live life to the fullest, no matter what.
Her story provides a rare and very honest look into the experience of one who is recovering from traumatic spinal injury and is intended to uplift anyone similarly injured with head, spinal or other extreme and life-changing trauma. In addition, Margie's book includes priceless information for anyone - from family members to hospital staff - who is involved in caring for such patients. Besides her moving story, practical down-to-earth suggestions are offered throughout, and the carefully compiled resource guide in the Appendix is invaluable as well.
I am so anxious for my patients to read this inspiring book that I have asked permission to use the pre-publication copy. I'm always eager to find new material which will provide hope for those experiencing the dark times. Margie Williams' book is an exquisite example of such an instrument.
